Salem Lutheran School

Writing Portfolio

Salem Lutheran School implements a writing portfolio for all students beginning in Kindergarten. These portfolios follow the student each year and include samples of writings from each grade. The writing portfolios are designed to build upon previous knowledge.  Opening Assessments would be based upon where students ended the previous year.  Paragraph writing is evaluated for fluidity, and more complex writing structures as years progress.

Salem Lutheran School seeks to glorify God through Christ centered teaching, academic excellence, and Christian service within a distinctly loving and nurturing environment.  We believe that a strong and comprehensive academic program is essential in your student’s educational process.  Salem is committed to exceeding all state standards of education.  Salem offers a challenging core curriculum that is complimented by auxiliary classes such as Physical Education, visual and performing arts, Bible and a technology one-to-one program.

Accreditation- Salem Lutheran School holds a dual accreditation with the National Lutheran School Accreditation (NLSA) as well as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Testing- Each fall students complete a battery of standardized tests through the implementation of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).  These scores are utilized to drive instruction for the remainder of the school year to support our students to achieve the highest level possible.

Student Activities- Each year Salem students are provided the opportunity to compete in local academic competitions such as Science Olympics, Spelling Bees, and Geography Bees.

Curriculum- Salem provides a solid foundation for the development of fundamental components of learning through the use of textbooks and resources designed to meet the needs of 21st century learners.  Most importantly, Salem incorporates Biblical principles into all areas of our curricula.

Faculty- Salem is committed to providing teachers who meet the high standards described in our Mission Statement and Accreditation requirements.  Grades K-4 are taught in a traditional classroom setting with one main teacher providing instruction in the core areas.  Beginning in 5th and 6th grade students begin limited transitions between teachers in preparation for the multiple transitions in our Jr. High program.  Salem has specialized teachers for Physical Education, Art, and Music.

Technology- Salem provides each student with a comprehensive technology program.  Each student in grades 3-8 participate in a technology One-To-One program designed to implement technology into all curricula areas.
