Salem Resource Program Update
As many of you have heard, we are saying farewell this year to our Resource Director & Teacher, Mrs. Laura Sauer, as she retires from a meaningful career in Lutheran education.
Salem has been blessed by Mrs. Sauer who has served in ministry for 20 years in our resource program and earned the title of Elementary Educator of the Year in 1999. From 2000-2005 she directed and supported Salem’s resource teacher while working with Lutheran Special Education Ministries through the Pacific Southwest District that our school belongs to. In 2005, she was Called full-time to Salem to be our Resource Director & Teacher.
“It has been quite a ride," said Laura. "One I cherish and value. Decisions are always hard, and I am trusting in the Lord to know that this is 'the next right thing' for me and for Salem Lutheran, Orange. Salem remains in my prayers and as my home congregation.”
We plan to celebrate Laura Sauer's ministry and service to Jesus and our students at an upcoming Salem worship service; we will share details soon.
In the meantime, it is my pleasure to share the addition of Mrs. Nicole Kelso to our team as Student Success Teacher as we reimagine and adapt our resource program to a push-in and co-teaching model of instruction and support.
This updated approach creates an inclusive, social model of accommodation that will shift the way we serve our students to provide support within and in conjunction with general classroom instruction. If your child is part of our Student Success Program (resource), we will be in touch soon about how we will continue to support your student this year.
Please read more about Mrs. Kelso below.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
"This verse is a reminder to me that God is always at work in my life and I rejoice in the plans God has for me!"
Mrs. Kelso holds a Masters of Education and CA Teaching Credential from Concordia University, where she also earned her BA in Behavioral Science. She is a growth-minded teacher eager to continue her teaching ministry in a nurturing, Christ-centered environment. She is passionate about engaging students to be active learners, and building relationships with students and their families. Nicole is strong in the area of implementing assessments and enjoys using data to drive instruction for individuals, as well as small or whole groups of students. She believes in structure and routines in order to create an easy and safe learning environment for students with clear and direct behavior and learning expectations.
Mrs. Kelso is pictured here with her husband Corey, who teaches 7th Grade at Salem, and their two boys. We're excited to welcome her to our Salem Family!
